Initiators
The non-profit organisation artrmx e.V. was founded in 2006 with the objective to support and popularise contemporary photography, street art, graphic, video art and painting. The members of the artrmx e.V. work in different fields of culture and event management or they are artists themselves. This gives the artrmx e.V. the possibility to act on a professional basis on the art market, while still having contact to the subculture, especially the one in Cologne. www.artrmx.com
Colorrevolution e.V. was founded in 2010. The objective of this cooperative work is to make street art in the city of Cologne more popular by realising legal street art projects. So far they have already succeeded by organising local street artists to paint the frontage of various houses in Cologne-Ehrenfeld. www.colorrevolution.de
The Philosophy behind CityLeaks
The festival name CityLeaks refers to the philosophy of not-keeping-quiet. It expresses the inability to censor art. Due to its exposure in public places, Street art is accessible to everybody, yet at the same time vulnerable. The objective of the CityLeaks Festival 2011 is to increase society´s awareness of Street art. Thus, this form of art manages to make people subversively aware of grievances. Street art is omnipresent. People come across it on a daily basis in the form of graffiti, stickers, and posters. What originally began as an illegal movement has since become a serious development in contemporary art.
The main focus of international art will be placed on Cologne when the big names of this recent form of modern art join forces in Cologne for the first time and realise their art work at the Cityleaks 01 festival.
In comparison to Berlin or other large cities, Cologne has numerous unused areas of industrial wasteland. They are not being used to their full potential. On the one hand, the architecture of the city is considerably horrible; on the other hand, there are high cultural expectations. Our festival does not want public walls to be taken over for commercial or publicity reasons. Instead, we want to save them for art?, quoted by Iren Tonoian, CityLeaks 01 Organiser.
There is a Chinese saying: when the walls are white, people have nothing to talk about. CityLeaks is exactly what Cologne needs, adds Anne Scherer, the CityLeaks 01 curator.
