[tabcontent name="about"]

With their symmetrical compositions, intricate patterns, and lush colors, Maya Hayuk’s paintings and massively scaled murals recall views of outer space, traditional Ukrainian crafts, airbrushed manicures, and mandalas. Hayuk weaves visual information from her immediate surroundings into her elaborate abstractions, creating an engaging mix of referents from popular culture and advanced painting practices alike while connecting to the ongoing pursuit of psychedelic experience in visual form. She has painted her iconic outdoor murals all over the world and, when not traveling, maintains an active studio in Brooklyn, sketching in paint to inform the large-scale works. She sees her studio painting practice and mural making as both inversely relational and symbiotic.

Maya Hayuk was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1969. She earned a BFA in Interrelated Media from Massachusetts College of Art in 1991 and has studied at the University of Odessa, Odessa, Ukraine and at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Skowhegan, Maine. Hayuk’s work will be the subject of a forthcoming solo exhibition at The Hammer Museum, LA, CA (2013). Her work has been the subject of one person exhibitions and commissions at venues including Bonnefanten Museum, Maastricht, The Netherlands (2012); Socrates Sculpture Park, Queens, New York (2011); Musee E.A.V., Rio De Janiero, Brazil (2011); Matucana Artspace, Santiago, Chile (2009); Democratic National Convention, Denver, Colorado (2008); and Monster Island, Brooklyn, New York (2005-2011). Her work has been included in group exhibitions such as Streetopia, The Luggage Store, San Francisco (2012); Black Light & Outer Space, Secret Project Robot, Brooklyn, New York (2011); Rojo Nova, Museum of Image and Sound, Sao Paolo, Brazil (2010); Contemporary Art 2010, Ukrainian Institute of America, New York (2010); Sous l’es bombs, Musee International des Arts Modeste, Sete, France (2007); The Zine Unbound: Kults, Werewolves, and Sarcastic Hippies, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco, CA (2005).

Hayuk has curated numerous exhibitions, is a member of the Barnstormers collective and part of Cinders Art Collective. She lives in Brooklyn, New York.

For their outdoor interventions artists will be provided with public sites that will be designed freely and legally. Outdoor exhibition sites will comprise of a number of house facades, gables, off-spots and public places across the Cologne urban space. In a single central festival site CityLeaks 2013 will present participant artists and their works in a large indoor exhibition. Apart from that, all creative processes during the festival will be tracked in a specially devised Process Room that will form part of the indoor exhibition. In its documentary function, this room attempts to keep track of various processes of artistic creation – from first drafts to final completion. In its interactive function, the process room seeks to map the urban space impacted by the festival. In addition to CityLeaks main exhibition a multitude of galleries, museums and art spaces in and around Cologne will join CityLeaks 2013. The Festival will be complemented by an exciting programme. In an interdisciplinary approach it wants to present current tendencies in contemporary art and urban culture. Theater performances, video mappings, movie screenings, open discussions, guided tours, music performances and happenings will broaden the colourful spectrum of contemporary urban culture and thus inspire a discourse about art in public space. Moreover, the programme will act as a creative mediator. Festival visitors are invited to participate in a one-week workshop, the “Urban Hacking Academy” – a workshop devoted to the theoretical discussion and practical realization of urban interventions.

For several month a film team of Cologne production company Namugrafie featured CityLeaks Urban Art Festival’s first edition in 2011. The documentary captures the festival’s special atmosphere and takes the audience onto a trip across the Cologne urban space. While facades, gables and industrial fallows turn into colourful works of arts they bring these formerly bleak urban sceneries to the public’s attention. The film offers an exciting insight into the artistic processes and listens when artists and festival initiators have a say.

From 5th to 25th September 2011 nationally and internationally acclaimed urban artists took over the city of Cologne.

Large-scale murals, paste-ups and installations in public places, on facades and gables as well as in several off-locations and galleries greatly enriched the urban landscape and revealed most diverse facets of artistic expression.

Guided tours along murals and exhibition sites were offered during the entire run of the festival. Apart from that, an exciting programme including movie screenings, open discussions, music performances and live paintings helped to familiarize the public with different tendencies of urban culture, provided background knowledge and created new spaces for convention and discourse.

By inviting a multitude of artists from Chile, Brazil, Mexico and Argentina a main curatorial focus in 2011 was laid on presenting the rich and dynamic Latin American urban art scene.

27 house facades and gables all across the Cologne city centre and the borough of Ehrenfeld functioned as exhibition space. Apart from that, the festival was completed by 14 indoor exhibitions in various galleries, off-locations and art institutions.
